“CANTAMAGGIO”

“Cantamaggio” is an ancient event typical of Ficulle, that sings about the joy for the arrival of summertime, the fertility of hearth and animals, and love, but not only: it exorcizes evil, drives sadness away, invites to eat and drink one’s fill, and transmits unmistakably a message of vitality and hope in a better tomorrow.
“FICAIA”, Ficulle coats of arms

The “Ficaia”, the fig tree, is the symbol of the local coat of arms of Ficulle. It derives from ficus, or better from Ficùlnea, standing for “fig tree”, and it refers to the generous land. The “peasant and rustic” hypothesis is supported by the analogy with some adjoining villages, as Allerona (coming from “allerone, lellerone”, the local noun standing for arbutus) and Parrano (coming from Parra, Latin noun for hoopoe).
